Empty Water Bottle Award

Something we’ve done with our U16Gs the past couple of seasons—and now U19Gs—is the “Empty Water Bottle Award”.

After each game, teams choose a player from the opposing side who they believe competed with maximum intensity and heroism the entire match. It’s a fun way to recognize and encourage players to strive to compete (which can provide a much-needed boost in confidence) while also teaching sportsmanship.

I think it’s also a way we coaches can continue to build a unique and supportive soccer culture, in our girls leagues especially. Sometimes players fear standing out for being amazing, as much as they fear making mistakes.
